Colegio Rochester Strengthens Its AP and AP Capstone Programs
By Andrea Polanco, High School Principal
In recent years, Colegio Rochester has experienced significant growth in its Advanced Placement (AP) program, expanding its academic offerings to provide students with greater opportunities for advanced learning, research, and preparation for university.
This growth is reflected not only in the number of students participating in AP courses but also in their academic results and, particularly, in the consolidation of our AP Capstone program, which fosters the development of research, critical thinking, argumentation, and academic communication skills.
Remarkable Growth in the AP Program
Recently, Patrick McDermott, the new College Board coordinator for Latin America, visited Colegio Rochester as part of a tour of educational institutions across Colombia that have experienced the highest rates of growth in their AP programs in recent years.
According to preliminary information shared during the meeting, while the average growth rate among schools offering AP courses in Colombia has been 107%, Colegio Rochester has achieved 300% growth in its program over the past several years. These figures are part of a report scheduled for official publication in the coming weeks.
This recognition is particularly meaningful because Rochester was one of only four schools visited by the AP coordinator for Latin America in Colombia as part of this tour.
In addition to increased participation, our academic results demonstrate a positive trend. Currently, 76% of our students earn a score of 3 or higher on AP exams, placing our results above the national average for schools offering this program.
These achievements reflect the collaborative efforts of students, teachers, families, and academic leaders who have contributed to building a culture of high expectations, autonomy, and preparation for the challenges of university life.
As part of this journey, we would like to acknowledge Mariamónica Muñoz, who led the AP program through last year and whose work was instrumental in strengthening and expanding it. We are deeply grateful for her commitment, leadership, and dedication to developing an academic offering that continues to grow and provide new opportunities for our students.
AP Capstone: A Program That Continues to Grow
One of the most significant achievements of this process has been the consolidation of our AP Capstone program, an academic experience that enables students to develop research and critical thinking skills through AP Seminar and AP Research, alongside additional AP courses.
Over the past two years, seven Colegio Rochester students have earned the AP Capstone Diploma:
First year: 2 students.
Second year: 5 students.
The increase from two to five diplomas in a single year demonstrates not only greater participation but also the strengthening of our students’ ability to engage in more complex academic work.
AP Capstone is particularly well aligned with our educational philosophy, as it provides students with opportunities to formulate questions, investigate real-world issues, analyze different perspectives, construct well-supported arguments, and communicate their conclusions rigorously and effectively.
A Program Aligned with Our Educational Philosophy
During his visit, Patrick McDermott highlighted the strong connection between the AP program and Colegio Rochester’s educational approach. In particular, he noted that the academic flexibility offered by AP allows for meaningful integration with the school’s educational philosophy and supports the choices and opportunities for advanced learning we seek to provide our students.
This flexibility allows students, beginning in High School, to progressively build an academic pathway aligned with their interests and strengths by combining full-year and semester-long AP courses. Students pursuing the AP Capstone Diploma follow a pathway that includes AP Seminar, AP Research, and four additional AP courses.
In this way, the program goes beyond exam preparation. It becomes an opportunity for students to develop skills that will be essential throughout their university studies and professional lives.
Growing with Purpose
The growth of the AP program represents much more than an increase in the number of courses offered or students enrolled. It reflects Colegio Rochester’s commitment to an education that prepares students to think critically, conduct research, develop well-supported arguments, communicate effectively, and learn independently.
The results achieved in recent years, together with the growth in the number of AP Capstone Diploma recipients, demonstrate that our students are making the most of these opportunities and that our academic offerings continue to expand in response to their interests and the challenges of higher education and today’s world.
We celebrate this growth while embracing the challenge of continuing to strengthen the program so that more students can discover new opportunities through AP and AP Capstone to develop their academic potential and build their own pathways to university.
Growth is significant, but the true achievement lies in the learning opportunities we are creating for our students.
