From Helping Hands to Moving Ideas: Our EMS Journey

By Clemencia Pinzón

This term, our third graders have had the opportunity to learn, help, explore, and make connections. Through EMS, they have discovered how English, Mathematics, and Science come together to help us better understand ourselves, our community, and the world around us.

We began our journey with “A Helping Hand.” Students reflected on what it means to help others and on the different ways we can care for and contribute to our community. They discovered that helping can mean supporting a friend, working as a team, taking responsibility, or simply looking for opportunities to make our community a better place.

From our helping hands, we moved into an exciting world of transportation. Students explored different means of transportation and discovered how each one plays an important role in our daily lives. They learned that transportation allows us to travel, connect with others, move goods and supplies, and support communities around the world.

Then, a Science question sparked our curiosity:

How does transportation move?

To answer this question, students explored push and pull forces, discovering that these forces are part of many different types of movement. They also explored magnetism and discovered how magnets can help us in simple, everyday situations.

In Mathematics, our learning continued to move forward. Students strengthened their understanding of three-digit numbers and place value, recognizing how hundreds, tens, and ones work together. They also practiced addition and subtraction with and without regrouping, using different strategies to solve problems and explain their thinking.

Now, all these learning experiences come together in our final EMS challenge.

Each student will choose a means of transportation and create a three-digit number plate. They will represent their number in standard form and expanded form, connecting their place-value learning to the transportation they chose. They will also explore how their transportation moves and identify the pushes and pulls involved in its movement.

This final experience brings together so many of the ideas we have explored throughout the term: helping others, caring for our community, different means of transportation, three-digit numbers, place value, addition and subtraction, movement, pushes and pulls, and magnetism.

What a journey it has been! From our first helping hands to the ideas that are now moving forward, our third graders are discovering that learning is everywhere and that when we connect what we know, we can better understand the world around us.
