My Family Book: Conociendo a mi familia a través de la escritura

En Rochester School, los estudiantes de Transición han asumido el reto de finalizar el año fortaleciendo sus habilidades de escritura en inglés. A través del proyecto My Family Book, los niños aprendieron a escribir oraciones cortas y transformarlas en pequeños párrafos para hablar sobre ellos mismos y sus familias, utilizando información real proporcionada por sus hogares, fotografías y experiencias personales. Como preparación para este proyecto, los estudiantes aprendieron vocabulario relacionado con la familia mediante imágenes, videos, dictados y diferentes actividades que les permitieron utilizar las nuevas palabras en contextos reales y significativos.

Después de explorar y practicar el vocabulario con diversas estrategias, iniciamos la creación de My Family Book. Los estudiantes decoraron sus libros con fotografías familiares y escribieron información sobre diferentes miembros de sus familias. Para enriquecer este proceso, trabajamos con videos, cuentos y reuniones de círculo que les permitieron reflexionar sobre la importancia de cada integrante de su familia y recopilar la información necesaria para completar sus escritos. Esta experiencia fortaleció su conexión emocional con la actividad y les permitió desarrollar estructuras simples de escritura en inglés mientras compartían experiencias significativas con sus compañeros.

A través de este proyecto, los estudiantes han fortalecido sus habilidades de escritura en inglés mientras satisfacen varias de las necesidades básicas propuestas por la Teoría de la Elección, especialmente las de amor y pertenencia, diversión, poder y reconocimiento. Al tener la oportunidad de hablar y escribir sobre las personas más importantes de sus vidas, los niños encontraron un propósito auténtico para utilizar el idioma. Ha sido inspirador observar cómo mejoran su confianza y sus habilidades de comunicación mientras disfrutan del aprendizaje, escuchan a otros y celebran el valor de sus familias.

My Family Book: Getting to Know My Family Through Writing

At Rochester School, First Grade students have taken on the challenge of strengthening their English writing skills as they finish the school year. Through the My Family Book project, students learned how to write short sentences and transform them into simple paragraphs to talk about themselves and their families using real information shared by their families, photographs, and personal experiences. As an introduction to the project, students learned family vocabulary through images, videos, dictations, and engaging activities that allowed them to use new words in meaningful, real-life contexts.

After reviewing and practicing the vocabulary through different strategies, we began creating My Family Book. Students decorated their books with family pictures and wrote information about different family members. Throughout the process, they watched videos, listened to stories, and participated in Circle Meetings that encouraged them to reflect on the importance of each family member while gathering the information needed to complete their writing. This experience helped students build a stronger emotional connection to the activity and supported the development of simple English writing structures while sharing meaningful experiences with their classmates.

Through this project, First Grade students have strengthened their English writing skills while satisfying several of the basic needs identified in Choice Theory, especially love and belonging, fun, recognition, and power. By having the opportunity to talk and write about the people who are most important in their lives, students found an authentic purpose for using English. It has been inspiring to watch them grow in confidence and communication skills while enjoying the learning process, listening to others, and celebrating the importance of their families.
