Rochester Joins the Global Nord Anglia Community
By Paul Giles, LRC Director
As Rochester continues building relationships within the Nord Anglia family, our students are beginning to take advantage of opportunities to connect, collaborate, and learn alongside young people from schools all across the world.
This year has already brought exciting milestones in two initiatives supported by the Learning Resources Centre: the **Global Campus Book Club** and the **Nord Anglia Global Chess Tournament**.
A Global Community of Readers
Our participation in the Global Campus Book Club is already off to a wonderful start.
This year’s theme, **Translated Tales**, invites students to explore stories that have travelled across languages, cultures, and countries. Beginning with our Lower Primary students, Rochester readers have already started sharing their love of books with the wider Nord Anglia community through videos uploaded to the Book Club Sharing Wall.
One particularly thoughtful contribution came from **Joaquín Barrera**, who shared his enthusiasm for *Momo*, the beloved novel by Michael Ende. Through contributions like Joaquín’s, Rochester students are helping introduce their favourite stories to readers from around the world.
By logging in with your child’s institutional email account, you can see his video and those of other students on the Global Campus Sharing Wall:
The Book Club offers much more than book recommendations. Students can watch videos created by their peers in different countries, comment on one another’s ideas, and discover books they might never otherwise encounter. Through this process, they develop not only reading habits but also curiosity, empathy, and global citizenship.
As part of Global Campus, the platform is available exclusively to Nord Anglia students, providing a safe environment where young readers can connect with peers from across the globe.
We encourage all interested students to participate by uploading their own recommendations and exploring what students in other countries are reading.
Rochester’s First Global Chess Teams
This year also marks a historic achievement for Rochester as we prepare to participate in the **Nord Anglia Global Chess Tournament** for the first time.
Students from Nord Anglia schools around the world will compete in online team events through Global Campus and Lichess, supported by chess experts, including a FIDE Master and an International Arbiter.
In recognition of their outstanding performances in the **Daniel Aljure Chalela Chess Tournament**, **Antonia Vargas** has been appointed captain of Rochester’s Under-11 team, while **Emilio Carvajal** will lead our Under-18 team.
Together with their teammates, they will represent Rochester in a global competition that celebrates strategic thinking, perseverance, planning, sportsmanship, and resilience.
The tournament will take place on **3 December 2026**, with opportunities for students to advance to international finals scheduled for March and April 2027.
Beyond the competition itself, the initiative allows students to learn from fellow chess players from many different countries while helping establish what could become a lasting Rochester chess tradition.
Looking Ahead
Whether through books or chess, Rochester students are already demonstrating what it means to be part of an international community of learners.
We are proud of the students who have taken the first steps into these global opportunities and look forward to seeing even more Rochester readers, thinkers, and players connecting with the wider Nord Anglia community throughout the year.
