Learning science for life

By, Lois Torres Brown, Middle School Director

This short text is an overview of what we are doing in Science class in Middle School, specifically in 8th grade.

We have just begun exploring evolution and the mechanisms that make this process possible. This is quite a challenge because evolution is such an abstract concept, influenced by so many variables, that it can be difficult to teach. Even adults struggle to understand evolution.

To address this challenge, I have divided the process into three stages: investigate, reinforce, and apply.

At this point, we have just completed the investigation stage, in which students had to find information about two major types of selection: natural and artificial selection. This was intended to introduce students to the topic.

Next, we will move on to guided research into the variables and processes involved in evolution. Then, we will apply our knowledge using an online simulator, making predictions and manipulating variables to achieve specific results.

To conclude, we will explore evolution through the fossil record, bringing this topic to an end. After completing the first part of the investigation stage, I consider it a success. The students have created beautiful posters, and I hope their enthusiasm continues to grow until we complete this learning process.
