Our visit to the Operation Smile Foundation headquarters in Bogotá aimed to provide us with a deeper understanding of the invaluable work carried out by this organization and the ways in which it contributes to the well-being of its patients and their families. Throughout the day, we had the opportunity to learn about the experiences of those receiving care, meet the professionals involved in the foundation’s mission, and discover how every team member plays a role in making a positive impact.
One of the most meaningful moments of the visit was spending time with several patients, listening to their personal stories, and learning about the challenges they have faced throughout their medical journeys. We also had the privilege of speaking with volunteer plastic surgeons, who shared their experiences, their commitment to the foundation, and the motivations that inspire them to use their knowledge and skills in service of others.
Later, we toured the facilities to learn about the different areas of work and gain a better understanding of the various stages of patient care, support, and recovery. As part of the experience, we participated in the creation of arm immobilizers that will be used by young patients after surgery. This activity allowed us to contribute in a meaningful way to one of the foundation’s needs and helped us recognize how even small actions can make a significant difference in a patient’s recovery process.
This visit was a deeply enriching experience that encouraged us to reflect on the value of empathy, volunteerism, and teamwork. Learning about the patients’ stories and witnessing the dedication of those who make this work possible reminded us that solidarity goes far beyond offering help. It also means listening, supporting, and committing ourselves to the well-being of others. We left with the certainty that every action, no matter how small it may seem, has the power to transform lives and help build a more compassionate, inclusive, and caring community.
“Every restored smile reflects the hope, commitment, and generosity of many people working together to transform lives.”
