Numbers in Balance: A Place Value Experience
By Aída Ostos, Math Curriculum Specialist
One of the pillars of our school is useful learning: learning that invites students to understand what they study, connect it with their surroundings, and apply it in real-life situations. Within this purpose, mathematics takes on a special meaning because it provides a language for representing quantities, communicating ideas, establishing relationships, and finding solutions to different situations in the world.
In 5th C Math class, students have been studying place value and the different ways in which a number can be represented. Although they can learn to write quantities in expanded form, it is sometimes difficult for them to recognize how this mathematical representation can be useful in real-life situations.
To establish this connection, students participated in a hands-on activity using triple-beam balances. In this instrument, each beam has a different scale connected to ones, tens, and hundreds. By moving the riders until the balance reached equilibrium, students obtained the values represented on each scale. In this way, the balance displayed the object’s mass in a form similar to expanded form. For example:
300 + 70 + 5 = 375 grams
To determine the total mass, students had to interpret these values and express them in standard form. A concept that might initially have seemed like a written procedure became a necessary tool for reading a measuring instrument correctly.
The experience also created a meaningful connection between mathematics and science. Students observed, handled the balance, proposed hypotheses, checked their results, and discovered that place value helps us organize and interpret quantities found in the real world.
When students can observe and use mathematics, numbers stop being isolated symbols and become tools for understanding the world.
Through this activity, we aimed to help students recognize the applications of their learning without overlooking the importance of the fundamental concepts upon which new knowledge is built. Understanding ones, tens, and hundreds is not simply about decomposing numbers; it provides an essential foundation for measuring, calculating, comparing, and solving increasingly complex situations.
The other 5th-grade groups will participate in this experience at different times. Throughout the year, we hope to provide students with more opportunities to connect mathematics with other subject areas, as they did with science during this activity. In this way, students can learn, enjoy themselves, use different tools, and strengthen their mathematical foundations at the same time.
