Sandra Liliana Martínez-Compton, Ingeniería con Propósito y Liderazgo con Impacto

La historia de Sandra Liliana Martínez-Compton, promoción 1999 del Colegio Rochester, es un reflejo de perseverancia, trabajo en equipo y vocación de servicio, valores que marcaron su formación y hoy definen su liderazgo en la industria aeroespacial.

Criada en Colombia, inició su camino universitario estudiando Ingeniería Industrial en la Universidad de los Andes. Durante ese periodo enfrentó importantes retos académicos, especialmente en física. En un momento decisivo regresó al Colegio Rochester en busca de apoyo, y una clase con Mauricio Bautista transformó por completo su comprensión de la materia. Desde entonces, la dificultad se convirtió en confianza, confirmándole el valor del acompañamiento oportuno y el poder transformador de un buen maestro.

Posteriormente, transfirió sus estudios a Florida International University (FIU), donde obtuvo su Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering. Más adelante cursó una Maestría en Technical Management en Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, integrando el conocimiento técnico con una sólida visión estratégica y de gestión de proyectos.

Desde hace casi dos décadas, Sandra hace parte de The Boeing Company, donde ha trabajado en áreas como diseño de interiores de aeronaves, certificación, producción y desarrollo de materiales. Actualmente se desempeña como Senior Engineering Manager, liderando equipos enfocados en el desarrollo de materiales y soporte a producción para sistemas de cableado e interiores de aeronaves. Su rol combina excelencia técnica, coordinación interdisciplinaria y liderazgo colaborativo, impulsando soluciones más eficientes, seguras y sostenibles.

Durante la pandemia, participó activamente en iniciativas orientadas a fortalecer la bioseguridad y el cuidado de las personas, reafirmando su visión de la ingeniería como una disciplina al servicio del bienestar integral.

Su impacto trasciende el ámbito profesional. Ha trabajado con niños huérfanos en África, con comunidades vulnerables en Guatemala y, durante años, ha acompañado organizaciones como SHPE y GMiS, motivando a niños, jóvenes y universitarios a explorar carreras STEM. Asimismo, continúa vinculada a proyectos de voluntariado y mentoría que amplían oportunidades para nuevas generaciones.

Sandra reconoce con gratitud la huella que dejaron en su vida los profesores Iliana Aljure, Jorge Mejía Meli y Hellman Barragán, quienes fortalecieron tanto su formación académica como su dimensión humana.

En 2025 fue distinguida con el Premio Dra. Ellen Ochoa, un reconocimiento a ingenieras y científicas hispanas que han realizado contribuciones sobresalientes en la ingeniería aeroespacial. Su trayectoria encarna el espíritu de este galardón: liderazgo que innova, cuida y abre caminos para otros.

Hoy, su historia inspira a la comunidad Rochesteriana a creer en el proceso, apoyarse en el trabajo en equipo y utilizar el conocimiento para generar un impacto positivo en el mundo.

Engineering with purpose and leadership with impact

The story of Sandra Liliana Martínez-Compton, class of 1999 at Rochester School, reflects perseverance, teamwork, and a strong commitment to service—values that shaped her education and now define her leadership in the aerospace industry.

Raised in Colombia, she began her university studies in Industrial Engineering at the University of the Andes, where she faced significant academic challenges, particularly in physics. At a decisive moment, she returned to Rochester School seeking support, and a class with Mauricio Bautista completely transformed her understanding of the subject. What once felt like difficulty became confidence, reinforcing her belief in the power of timely support and impactful teaching.

She later transferred to Florida International University (FIU), earning a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering, and went on to complete a Master’s Degree in Technical Management at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University, combining technical expertise with strategic and project management skills.

For nearly two decades, Sandra has been part of The Boeing Company, where she has worked across multiple areas, including aircraft interiors design, certification, production, and materials development. She currently serves as a Senior Engineering Manager, leading teams focused on materials development and production support for aircraft wiring systems and interiors. Her role brings together technical excellence, interdisciplinary collaboration, and people-centered leadership to advance safe, efficient, and sustainable solutions.

During the pandemic, she actively contributed to initiatives focused on biosecurity and employee well-being, reaffirming her view of engineering as a discipline at the service of people.

Her impact extends beyond her professional role. Sandra has worked with orphaned children in Africa, supported vulnerable communities in Guatemala, and for many years has collaborated with organizations such as SHPE and GMiS, encouraging students from elementary school through university to pursue STEM careers. She remains actively involved in mentoring and volunteer initiatives that create opportunities for future generations.

Sandra gratefully acknowledges the influence of teachers Iliana Aljure, Jorge Mejía Meli, and Hellman Barragán, whose guidance strengthened both her academic foundation and personal growth.

In 2025, she received the Dr. Ellen Ochoa Award, honoring Hispanic engineers and scientists who have made outstanding contributions to aerospace engineering. Her career reflects the spirit of this recognition: leadership that innovates, cares, and opens doors for others.

Today, her story inspires the Rochester community to trust the journey, rely on teamwork, and use knowledge as a force for positive global impact.
