A Garden That Grows Through Differences: Inclusion Begins at Home

By Marcela Vallejo, Director of the Student Wellness Center

Recently, the Student Wellness Center carried out a very special workshop with several Lower Elementary classes, guided by Andrea Miranda, Preschool and Lower Elementary Counselor, and María Fernanda Segura, Coordinator of the DVL Program. The objective was as simple as it was profound: to help children recognize the wonderful ability we all have to care for ourselves and for others.

During the workshop, the children built a symbolic garden together. Stone by stone, color by color, leaf by leaf, they discovered that each element was different, but that when brought together in the same space, they created something truly beautiful. This garden became a powerful metaphor: when differences are respected and cared for, our relationships are enriched and coexistence becomes stronger.

This message is essential for life. Teaching children that differences bring richness, learning, and understanding is a gift that will stay with them forever. Learning to treat others the way we would like to be treated, respecting what each person feels, and offering a helping hand to those in need are lessons that are not learned overnight, but are built through small everyday actions, both at school and at home.

In the classroom, teachers continue reinforcing these values through simple activities and daily reflections about kindness, respect for differences, caring for what belongs to everyone, and the peaceful resolution of conflicts. However, this work becomes even more meaningful when it is strengthened within the family.

For this reason, families are invited to create spaces for conversation at home: talking about how everyone in a family is different, how those differences complement one another, and how helping each other allows us to feel important, safe, and loved. When a child feels valued for helping someone else or for learning from another person, their self-esteem grows and their view of the world becomes more empathetic.

Just like the garden the children created, our school flourishes when every difference has a place and when we all learn to care for one another. That growth begins in the classroom, but it is strengthened day by day at home.
