From Discipline to Excellence: The Journey of Manuel Fernando Muñoz Pérez ’95
By Andrés Mojica, Alumni Center Coordinator
For Manuel Fernando Muñoz Pérez, a member of the Class of 1995 at Rochester School, professional success is not measured solely by the positions one attains, but by the consistency between the principles that guide one’s decisions, the relationships built along the way, and the positive impact one has on others.
A lawyer from Universidad del Rosario, specializing in corporate law and an expert in labor law, Manuel has built an outstanding career spanning more than 25 years in the legal and business worlds. For nearly fifteen years, he led the Labor Relations and Social Management departments at Nestlé Colombia and in the Americas region, establishing himself as a leading figure in his field. In August 2026, he took on a new challenge as Vice President of Labor Relations at Avianca, one of the region’s most iconic organizations.
However, behind this successful career lies a conviction that has accompanied every stage of his life: leadership begins with character.
“One of the great lessons that a school education provides is the importance of developing one’s own judgment and learning to make decisions responsibly. Technical knowledge helps us understand problems, but character determines how we face them.”
When reflecting on his time at Rochester School, Manuel highlights a well-rounded education as one of the factors that most influenced his personal and professional development.
“The school always allowed me to maintain a balance and a truly well-rounded education. The blend of academics and athletics was a very important value in my life, and that is exactly what I pass on today to my daughters, who also attend Rochester.”
That connection between intellectual development, well-being, and balance continues to be fundamental in his life. Passionate about sports, Manuel finds physical activity to be a constant source of learning. He runs marathons, participates in Ironman 70.3 events, road cycling, and kart racing, and also enjoys swimming and motorcycling.
For him, sports and leadership share common principles: discipline, perseverance, preparation, and resilience.
“Significant results aren’t achieved overnight. They require consistency, patience, and the ability to overcome difficult moments. Well-being isn’t a reward you receive when you finish working; it’s a state that helps you live better, make better decisions, and exercise more balanced leadership.”
Throughout his career, Manuel has led complex transformations in highly demanding business environments. Among his most important lessons is that trust cannot be imposed or decreed.
“I learned that trust is built through actions and that challenging moments test a leader’s character.”
When he reflects on the factors that have sustained his professional growth, he identifies five fundamental pillars: integrity, continuous learning, discipline, building trusting relationships, and a constant willingness to step outside his comfort zone.
His message to students and young alumni of Rochester School is clear:
“Don’t obsess over getting there quickly. Build a life, not just a career. Protect your reputation and your principles, because trust is one of the most important assets you’ll ever have. And don’t be afraid to take on challenges, change course when necessary, or start over.”
Manuel’s story reflects how a well-rounded education can transcend the classroom and become a guide for life. His journey is a testament to the fact that professional excellence and personal well-being are not opposing paths, but complementary ones.
