My Plate: Learning Through Our Healthy Food Store
By Carolina Sandino, Kinder B Coordinator and E.M.S. Teacher
During our Learning Presentations, Kinder students proudly shared their *My Plate* mini-project with their families by transforming the classroom into a Healthy Food Store. This experience brought together English, Mathematics, and Science in a meaningful, hands-on learning adventure. The most special part was that everything was created, prepared, and organized by the children themselves, who became the main characters of their learning experience and confidently presented their discoveries to their parents.
Throughout the project, students explored the five food groups: fruits, vegetables, grains, protein, and dairy. They expanded their English vocabulary by naming different foods, identifying the group each food belonged to, and placing each item in the correct section of *My Plate*. Their learning went far beyond recognizing and naming words: the children also explained what different foods provide for our bodies and how they help us grow, stay strong, and maintain good health. In this way, they connected English vocabulary with scientific concepts about nutrition and the importance of a balanced diet.
Math played a particularly important role in our Healthy Food Store. The children became little shoppers, selecting products from the different food groups and paying for their purchases using our classroom currency: *RochiBills* and *RochiCoins*. Every purchase became a real-life math challenge. Students identified the value of the bills and coins, calculated the total cost of their selected products, and solved addition problems to determine how much they needed to pay. They also practiced subtraction when they used more money than necessary and calculated the change they should receive. Through these practical situations, children strengthened their number sense, calculation skills, and problem-solving abilities while making decisions and applying mathematics to everyday life.
English was integrated throughout the entire experience. Students used food vocabulary, practiced expressing their ideas, and explained their choices to their parents. Science came to life as they classified foods, connected them to the five food groups, and discussed their benefits for the human body. These interactions allowed children to demonstrate not only what they knew but also how they could apply their knowledge in meaningful contexts.
Our Learning Presentations were much more than an opportunity to display classroom work. They became a celebration of the children’s creativity, independence, and learning. By creating their own store, organizing the food, communicating in English, and solving mathematical problems, Kinder B students demonstrated how different areas of knowledge can come together naturally through a shared project.
Our Healthy Food Store showed us that children learn best when they are active participants in their own learning—creating, making decisions, solving problems, and sharing their discoveries with others. We are incredibly proud of the enthusiasm, creativity, and knowledge our Kinder B students demonstrated during their *My Plate* mini-project and Learning Presentations!
