Emociones en Flor: Los Pequeños de Prejardín Descubren la Magia de Leer

Esta semana los pequeños de prejardín tuvieron una osadía: ¡exigir lectura! Como es la rutina en el Colegio Rochester, los niños de prejardín se desplazaron en una fila de hormiguitas hasta el CRA, se colocaron sus zapatos de algodón y se metieron una burbuja de aire enorme en los cachetes (para que fueran tan inflados como fuera posible) e ingresaron en la sala de la biblioteca infantil.

“Miss Vale, ¿podemos leer El monstruo de colores?”. Ha pasado un mes y medio desde que comenzamos clases y ¡los chiquis ya empiezan a conocer libros, historias, cuentos y a pedirlos! ¿Cómo decirles que no? Leímos El monstruo de colores. En clase, juntos, pasamos por todas las emociones: amarillos de alegría soltamos las carcajadas, negros de susto temblamos nerviosos, azules de tristeza gritamos cual haciendo un berrinche, verdes de calma nos sentamos con las piernas cruzadas para meditar, y rojos de rabia…

Culminamos la lectura aprendiendo una canción para cerrar los cuentos, y sintiéndonos un poco más livianos: todas las emociones ya habían sido colocadas dentro de sus respectivos frascos. Así, los niños de prejardín ya comienzan a navegar las emociones, entender sus manifestaciones y reconocer cómo están bajo su poder.

¿El resultado? Una fila de hormiguitas con libro abrazado junto al corazón que empieza a encontrar en los libros refugio, compresión, risas, gritos, vida.

Al día siguiente, los niños me regalan una flor traída desde casa. Pegada en la pared de mi oficina veo la flor y el mensaje es claro: mis niños son mis pétalos y libres un día los veré volar. Pero por ahora, el jardín está florecido.

Emotions in Bloom: Pre-K Students Discover the Magic of Reading

This week, the little ones from pre-K took a bold step: they demanded story time! As part of their regular routine at Rochester School, the pre-K children marched like a line of tiny ants to the CRA, slipped on their cotton shoes, filled their cheeks with a giant bubble of air (to make them puff up as much as possible), and entered the children’s library room.

“Miss Vale, can we read The Color Monster?” It’s been a month and a half since the school year started, and already these little ones are getting to know books, stories, and tales —and even asking for them! How could I say no? So we read The Color Monster. Together in class, we went through all the emotions: yellow with joy we burst out laughing; black with fear, we trembled nervously; blue with sadness, we wailed like we were throwing a tantrum; green with calm, we sat cross-legged to meditate; red with anger…

We ended the story by learning a song to close our book time, feeling a little lighter —all the emotions had now been placed into their proper jars. And so, the pre-K children are already beginning to navigate their emotions, understand how they show up, and recognize that these feelings are under their power.

The result? A line of little ants hugging books to their hearts, beginning to discover in stories a place of refuge, understanding, laughter, shouting —life.

The next day, the children gave me a flower they had brought from home. Pinned to the wall in my office, I look at the flower and the message is clear: my children are my petals, and one day I will see them fly free.But for now, the garden is in full bloom.
