Leer las Imágenes: El Primer Paso Hacia la Lectura

¿Qué es la lectura? ¿Sabemos, todos, leer? El proceso de aprendizaje de lectura, con los pequeños de prejardín, empieza a través de la observación y la curiosidad. Y en esta edad, en que las letras son formas extrañas que estamos descubriendo, las imágenes se convierten en nuestras mejores amigas. Por eso, resulta siempre enriquecedor escuchar a los niños interpretar los cuentos a partir de las imágenes que ellos ven. Nos gusta empezar las clases de biblioteca observando la portada de los libros e imaginando, a partir de lo que vemos, de qué puede tratar el cuento.

Ya después, la lectura del cuento es otro cuento: como hay tantas palabras desconocidas para sus mentes, la comprensión de la historia recae en la entonación y los gestos con los que nosotros, los adultos, reforzamos el hilo narrativo. No obstante, en esta etapa, lo más valioso es invitarlos a leer las imágenes y dejarlos contarnos a nosotros de qué se trata la historia. Así es, querido lector: las imágenes también se pueden leer, y los lectores de imágenes más ávidos son —y no es sorpresa— los pequeños de prejardín.

En la biblioteca estamos recorriendo juntos ese camino, donde, desde la oportunidad de contarnos cuentos, cultivamos el amor por las historias, la semilla de la curiosidad y el interés por la literatura. Nuestra invitación es leerles los cuentos a los niños, sí, pero también dejarlos a ellos leernos los cuentos a nosotros.

Reading Images: The First Step Toward Reading

What is reading? Do we all know how to read? The process of learning to read, for the little ones in preschool, begins through observation and curiosity. And at this age, when letters are strange shapes we are just discovering, images become our best friends. That’s why it is always enriching to listen to children interpret stories based on the pictures they see. We like to begin our library classes by looking at the book covers and imagining, from what we observe, what the story might be about.

Later on, reading the story becomes another story in itself: since there are so many unfamiliar words for their young minds, understanding the tale depends on the tone and gestures we, the adults, use to reinforce the narrative thread. Nevertheless, at this stage, the most enriching part is inviting them to read the images and letting them tell us what the story is about. That’s right, dear reader: images can also be read, and the most eager image readers are —and it’s no surprise— the little ones in preschool.

In the library, we are walking that path together, where through the joy of storytelling we cultivate a love for stories, the seed of curiosity, and an interest in literature. Our invitation is to read stories to children, yes —but also to let them read the stories to us.
