During AP Calculus class, a project was developed aimed at creating a hypothetical sustainable forest. In this project, extensive research was conducted on the type of trees, plants and soil. Using graphical and mathematical methods such as trend analysis and behavior prediction, the aim was to create a sustainable forest. As a final product, we wanted to create a solution presented in an IEEE report and a simulation thereof in the VENSIM application (app for systems simulations).
This work goes beyond competent in view of the correct use of the platform recently introduced in class and the complexity of using the program’s tools which helped create conditionals and patterns to give instructions to the simulation of when to plant and cut the trees or the supplemental plants. Additionally, these tools were used to calculate the expenses and earnings based on the information generated by the variables of the trees and the supplemental plants. This simulation evidences thorough understanding of the topics covered in class and attainment of the aforementioned objective: to create a sustainable forest.

Interview given by Santiago Páez Aljure
¿Who achieved it? Juan Diego Acuña, Luis Daniel Casas and Santiago Páez, from Twelfth grade.
¿What was achieved or produced? We were able to model in Vensim a population of trees, as well as a sustainable rice crop within 20 years, taking into account the necessary expenses, maintenance of the plants, maintenance and the recovery of the soil, and, clearly, the number of trees and hectares of rice cultivated and harvested.
¿Why is it a work or a production which goes beyond the competent or expected level? We conducted extensive research on the characteristics of our trees and rice, as well as on the best way to keep our crop sustainable, not to mention the Vensim diagram that accurately represents all the population data of our crops.

Entrevista a Santiago Paez Aljure
