Un Liderazgo Que Nace Desde Adentro

Para José Manuel Clavijo, egresado de la promoción 2020, su trayectoria académica y profesional ha sido un camino de coherencia entre quién es y cómo quiere aportar al país. Hoy, mientras desarrolla sus prácticas en un espacio clave para las ciudades colombianas, reconoce que gran parte de su manera de ver el mundo fue moldeada en el Colegio Rochester, donde aprendió a actuar desde el control interno, a confiar en sus capacidades y a construir relaciones basadas en el respeto, el trabajo en equipo y el bienestar.

Tras graduarse, José Manuel decidió estudiar Ciencia Política, motivado por una inquietud profunda: entender cómo funcionan las instituciones y cómo se toman las decisiones que impactan la vida de millones de personas. Lo que inicialmente era curiosidad se transformó en convicción a medida que exploró la política desde dentro, incluso enfrentando el reto de lanzarse como candidato a edil, una experiencia que lo confrontó, lo fortaleció y le confirmó su vocación de servicio.

Actualmente, en su rol profesional, analiza proyectos de ley, sigue debates legislativos y participa en la relación institucional entre ciudades y el Gobierno Nacional. Su labor exige disciplina, criterio propio y una actitud orientada a las soluciones, cualidades que él relaciona directamente con su formación en el Rochester: un entorno donde aprendió a tomar decisiones conscientes, a alinear sus acciones con sus valores y a ver los retos como oportunidades de crecimiento.

Uno de los pilares más importantes en su vida sigue siendo la comunidad que construyó en el colegio. Sus amigos del Rochester se convirtieron en una red sólida de apoyo que lo ha acompañado en cada etapa. Para él, esto refleja un valor fundamental del colegio: comprender que el trabajo en equipo no solo implica colaborar, sino construir relaciones en las que cada persona se sienta vista, escuchada y respetada. Ese espíritu cooperativo también lo acompaña hoy en escenarios profesionales complejos, donde la empatía y la capacidad de escuchar se convierten en herramientas esenciales.

Asimismo, recuerda con gratitud a los profesores que lo guiaron con cercanía, humanidad y confianza. Más allá de los contenidos académicos, le enseñaron a pensar críticamente, a confiar en su criterio y a sentirse capaz de aportar en cualquier espacio. Esa confianza lo acompañó durante momentos exigentes, como iniciar la universidad en plena pandemia o enfrentar el proceso de su tesis, desafíos que abordó desde la resiliencia y la autonomía.

José Manuel identifica tres valores del colegio que hoy orientan su camino:

Empatía, para reconocer al otro en su humanidad antes que en sus diferencias.

Coherencia, para actuar alineado con sus principios incluso en contextos de alta presión.

Salud integral, entendida no solo como bienestar físico, sino como un equilibrio entre emociones, relaciones y propósito.

Para las nuevas generaciones del Colegio Rochester, José deja un mensaje nacido desde su propia experiencia:

“Aprovechen cada conversación, cada proyecto y cada espacio que el colegio les ofrece. La comunidad que construyen hoy será una red que los acompañará toda la vida. Y sigan sus sueños desde adentro, con responsabilidad, disciplina y corazón.”

Su historia refleja lo que caracteriza a muchos egresados del Colegio Rochester: personas que lideran con propósito, que actúan desde el control interno, que valoran el bienestar integral y que buscan aportar positivamente a su comunidad y a su país.

Leadership That Comes From Within

For José Manuel Clavijo, a member of the Class of 2020, his academic and professional path has been a journey of coherence between who he is and how he wants to contribute to his country. Today, while completing his internship in a key area for Colombian cities, he recognizes that much of the way he sees the world was shaped at Rochester School, where he learned to act from internal control, trust his abilities, and build relationships based on respect, teamwork, and well-being.

After graduating, José Manuel chose to study Political Science, driven by a deep curiosity: understanding how institutions work and how decisions that affect the lives of millions of people are made. What began as curiosity gradually became conviction as he explored politics from within, even taking on the challenge of running as a candidate for the Local Administrative Board (JAL)—an experience that challenged him, strengthened him, and confirmed his vocation for service.

Currently, in his professional role, he analyzes bills, follows legislative debates, and contributes to the institutional relationship between cities and the National Government. His work requires discipline, independent judgment, and a solution-oriented mindset—qualities he directly connects to his education at Rochester: an environment where he learned to make conscious decisions, align his actions with his values, and view challenges as opportunities for growth.

One of the most important pillars in his life continues to be the community he built at school. His Rochester friends became a strong support network that has accompanied him throughout every stage of his life. For him, this reflects a fundamental value of the school: understanding that teamwork is not only about collaboration but about building relationships in which every person feels seen, heard, and respected. This cooperative spirit continues to guide him today in complex professional environments, where empathy and the ability to listen are essential tools.

He also remembers with gratitude the teachers who guided him with closeness, humanity, and trust. Beyond academic content, they taught him to think critically, trust his judgment, and feel capable of contributing in any setting. That confidence supported him through demanding moments such as beginning university during the pandemic and facing the process of writing his thesis—challenges he approached with resilience and autonomy.

José Manuel identifies three values from his school experience that continue to guide him today:

Empathy, recognizing others through their humanity rather than their differences.

Coherence, acting consistently with one’s principles even in high-pressure environments.

Holistic health, understood not only as physical well-being but as a balance between emotions, relationships, and purpose.

For the new generations at Rochester School, José shares a message drawn from his own experience:

“Take advantage of every conversation, every project, and every opportunity the school offers you. The community you build today will become a network that will accompany you throughout your life. And follow your dreams from within—with responsibility, discipline, and heart.”

His story reflects what characterizes many Rochester graduates: people who lead with purpose, act from internal control, value holistic well-being, and seek to contribute positively to their community and their country.
